Molybdenum

Molybdenum

Molybdenum is a trace mineral that functions as a cofactor for a small number of enzymes involved in processing certain amino acids and breaking down compounds that would otherwise accumulate to harmful levels in the body. It’s essential in the strictest biological sense — without it, specific enzymatic processes don’t work — but it occupies the far end of the spectrum of trace minerals that require practical dietary attention, which is to say it requires essentially none.

Deficiency is extraordinarily rare. Molybdenum is found in legumes, whole grains, nuts, and leafy vegetables, and the amounts required are small enough that a diet with any meaningful variety covers them without effort. Documented cases of molybdenum deficiency in otherwise healthy people essentially don’t exist outside of highly specific medical contexts involving prolonged artificial nutrition.

It’s included in this library because it’s part of the complete picture of trace minerals the body requires, not because it’s something to actively manage. For the vast majority of people, molybdenum is simply a mineral that takes care of itself.

Mineral type: Trace mineral Pillar: Nourish

What it does for you

  • Cofactor for enzymes that process certain amino acids
  • Supports the breakdown of compounds that would otherwise accumulate harmfully in the body

Where to get it

  • Legumes, whole grains, nuts, leafy vegetables — found broadly across plant foods

Considerations

  • Deficiency is extraordinarily rare — one of the least likely nutritional gaps in any population eating varied food
  • Requirements are very small — dietary variety covers molybdenum needs without any specific attention
  • Not a mineral that warrants tracking, supplementation, or active management for virtually anyone

Signs your intake might be low

  • Deficiency in otherwise healthy people is essentially undocumented outside of prolonged artificial nutrition contexts

Common myths

  • Molybdenum needs to be actively monitored or supplemented — for anyone eating a varied diet, this mineral simply takes care of itself
