Neck & Upper Back — Dynamic Stretches
The neck and upper back are the starting point of a complete dynamic warm up — and for good reason. The muscles and joints in this region wake up slowly, particularly after sleep or extended periods of sitting, and moving through their range deliberately before training prepares them for the postural demands of whatever session follows.
Dynamic neck and upper back movements are gentle by nature. The neck is not a region that benefits from aggressive or fast movement — the goal here is controlled, progressive range of motion that increases blood flow, reduces stiffness, and prepares the cervical spine and upper trapezius for the demands of the session ahead. Slow, deliberate rotations and half circles are more productive than fast swinging movements that exceed comfortable range.
These movements take very little time and require no equipment or floor space. Two minutes of controlled neck and upper back dynamic work at the start of a session is a practical and accessible habit that pays off in better movement quality and less session to session stiffness over time.
Reference Card
Region: Neck and upper back Type: Dynamic — moving through range of motion Best Used: Before training as part of a warm up Repetitions: 10–15 per movement, per side where applicable
Movements
- Neck rotations
- Cervical half circles
Considerations
- Keep movements slow and controlled — the neck is not a region that benefits from fast or aggressive dynamic movement
- Range should increase gradually across repetitions as the tissue warms — don’t force full range from the first rep
- These movements are appropriate before any training session regardless of what muscle groups are being trained — the neck and upper back are involved in posture and bracing across all training
Programming Notes
- 2–3 minutes covering both movements is sufficient as a warm up for this region
- Works well as the starting point of a full body dynamic warm up routine working from the neck down
- Particularly valuable before upper body sessions and any session involving overhead movements
